Targeting Soweto: A Critical Strategy
The DA's strategy hinges on winning over Soweto’s nearly 500,000 voters, especially as the ANC’s influence appears to be waning. Zille, who launched her campaign at the Eyethu Centre on September 20, 2025, has made multiple visits to Soweto, aiming to expand the party's existing pockets of support. Local resident Seela Phineas Malesa, who switched allegiance from the now-defunct Land Party to the DA over a decade ago, reflects a sentiment shared by others: dissatisfaction with the ANC's representation.
Mixed Sentiments Among Voters
Despite some vocal supporters, like 56-year-old Malitsatsi Magoro, many remain skeptical of the DA's intentions, particularly given its historical association with white leadership. While recent polls show a competitive race, with the DA at 27% and the ANC at 31%, many in Soweto express hesitance. Senoane resident Simon Malope admitted to being impressed by Zille's initiatives but still struggles to trust the party due to its past. Others, like Maphindy Nsele, voiced concerns about the DA's commitment to addressing issues of racial equity and representation.
Challenges Ahead for the DA
The looming question for the DA is whether it can effectively mobilize its base in the face of anticipated low voter turnout. While Zille emphasizes the necessity of winning Soweto for coalition prospects, many residents question the party's capacity to deliver on its promises. Zille acknowledged the historical challenges but remains optimistic about the DA's growth in Soweto, pointing to the ANC's decline as an opportunity for her party.
