Danny Jordaan Secures Fourth Term as Safa President Amid Controversy

Danny Jordaan has been re-elected as president of the South African Football Association (Safa) for another four-year term, despite facing challenges and criticism throughout his tenure. The election took place on Saturday, September 12, where Jordaan secured 157 votes against AmaZulu owner Sandile Zungu, who garnered 82 votes.

In a press conference that followed the election, Jordaan expressed frustration towards journalists, accusing them of being pawns in Safa’s internal conflicts. He highlighted significant achievements during his leadership, including Banyana Banyana’s triumph as African champions in 2022 and Bafana Bafana's return to the World Cup after a 16-year absence. Jordaan claimed that the media often overlooks these successes, focusing instead on the controversies surrounding his administration.

Reflection on Democratic Processes

Jordaan, who has held the Safa presidency since 2013, was questioned about his decision to run for re-election after previously stating that his term would be his last. He maintained that Safa is a democratic organization, stating, "Tomorrow [the members] can have a vote of no confidence in me and I’m out." He emphasized that it is ultimately up to the members to decide his fate.

Gracious Defeat and Future Aspirations

Following the election results, Zungu accepted his defeat gracefully, acknowledging the outcome and congratulating Jordaan. He noted that he was content with the election process and would consider his future plans before determining if he would run again in 2030. Meanwhile, Jordaan reaffirmed his support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino, despite controversies surrounding Infantino’s leadership, and praised Safa’s contributions to global football.
