Debra Baxter's 'Ascent': A Journey Through Vulnerability and Mysticism

Debra Baxter's latest exhibition, 'Ascent,' now on display at Roq La Rue, invites viewers into a world where vulnerability intertwines with mysticism. Utilizing a variety of materials like alabaster, bronze, and quartz, Baxter creates jewel-like sculptures that reflect on themes of consciousness, nature, and spirituality.

In a striking turn of events, Baxter faced a health challenge when she contracted Covid in January 2022, leading to long Covid. This period of recuperation, which she describes as a blessing, transformed her artistic process. As she spent time away from her usual heavy equipment, visions began to emerge, offering her new insights into the physical and metaphysical realms.

Artistic Exploration of Consciousness

Among her captivating pieces are 'The Day I Tried to Live' and 'Fade Into You', where human hearts are adorned with crystals, representing both emotional and spiritual facets of existence. The latter piece features a hinge, allowing it to open and close, symbolizing the duality of being open-hearted yet guarded.

Women in Sculpture

Baxter's smaller-than-life alabaster busts depict women grappling with their own consciousness in a way historically reserved for male subjects. "The women depicted in these sculptures are trying to maintain higher consciousness, but keep fracturing and falling apart," Baxter explains, drawing inspiration from classical sculptures while emphasizing the strength and intuition inherent in femininity.

Other works, like 'Veil,' explore the fragility of perception and the thin veil between our world and the spiritual realm. The exhibition runs until October 3, providing a unique opportunity to experience Baxter's profound artistic journey.
