Drones to the Rescue: Climber Saved from Stawamus Chief Cliff

By Editor • September 11, 2026 • 2 min read

In a remarkable display of modern technology and teamwork, a specialized drone rescue team successfully saved a climber stranded on a ledge 250 feet above the ground at Stawamus Chief in Squamish, British Columbia. The daring rescue took place late on September 10, 2023, when a climber found himself stuck on a precarious ten-inch ledge during an attempt of the multi-pitch route known as Alaska Highway.

After assessing the challenging situation, which included darkness and rockfall hazards, the Squamish Search and Rescue team deployed two drones to assist in the operation. One drone provided critical lighting and aerial views, while the second was tasked with delivering essential gear to the stranded climber. Dustin Wales, the drone program coordinator for Squamish Search and Rescue, emphasized that the team had spent two years preparing for such a scenario, training drone pilots and developing protocols for rugged terrains.

A Tactical Approach to Rescue

The climber, who was climbing with two companions who made it down safely, communicated with rescuers to outline his needs. Using the first drone, the team sent up a pilot line to the climber, allowing him to pull up a jacket and headlamp for warmth and light. Following this, they utilized a larger drone equipped with a spotlight to illuminate the cliff face, enhancing visibility for the climber and rescuers alike.

Successful Descent and Team Effort

Once the climber had the necessary gear, the team employed high-tech laser measurement tools to ascertain the distance to the ground. They then sent a 300-foot climbing rope down, which the climber managed to capture mid-air. He secured it to his harness and anchor before rappelling safely to the ground. The successful operation not only showcased the effectiveness of drones in rescue missions but also highlighted the rigorous training and preparation of the Squamish Search and Rescue team, culminating in a triumphant outcome that drew cheers from the ground crew.
