Ecuador Supports US Operation Against Drug Traffickers in Pacific

The Ecuadorian government has come out in defense of a recent US operation that resulted in the sinking of three vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking activities in the Eastern Pacific. This action was described as part of a coordinated effort with the United States aimed at combating drug smuggling operations linked to organized crime.

During a broadcast with Teleamazonas, Ecuador’s Interior Minister John Reimberg stated that these vessels were serving as floating refueling stations for speedboats transporting drugs towards Mexico and the United States. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing the growing issue of drug trafficking.

The US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) supported Reimberg's assertions, confirming that the operation targeted a vessel identified as facilitating illicit at-sea drug trafficking in connection with the notorious Los Choneros gang. After ensuring the safety of individuals aboard the vessel, US forces proceeded to sink it. A video shared by SOUTHCOM showed the boarding and subsequent destruction of the vessel, though the timing and location of this footage have not been independently verified.

However, the operation has faced criticism from relatives of some crew members, who allege that the US military acted without sufficient evidence and that the men were merely fishermen. Reports indicate that 28 crew members from the targeted vessels were received by the Ecuadorian navy and brought to Manta, the country's main fishing port. Meanwhile, families anxiously awaited updates on their loved ones who were on the boats when the incidents occurred.
