A devastating explosion at a military barracks in Viacha, Bolivia, on September 4, 2026, has resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and left dozens more injured. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time, approximately 30 kilometers from the capital, La Paz, in an area designated for storing pyrotechnic materials.

According to local health director Rita Nebraska, the death toll could rise, with estimates suggesting that between 10 to 15 people may have perished in the blast. Reports indicate that 62 individuals sustained injuries, with 14 of them requiring transfer to hospitals in La Paz for urgent medical care, including a young girl suffering from third-degree burns.

In addition to the casualties, the explosion caused significant damage to the surrounding area, with police confirming that over 50 people were injured and numerous homes affected, primarily due to shattered windows. Emergency services, including ambulances and medical teams, were dispatched to the scene to assist with evacuations and provide medical attention. Firefighters have cautioned that a heat source remains at the site, posing a potential risk for further explosions, prompting officials to advise residents to maintain a safe distance of at least 150 meters.
