Emerging Talent Shines at 53rd Student Academy Awards

The 53rd Student Academy Awards, held at TIFF Lightbox during the Toronto International Film Festival, celebrated exceptional student filmmakers, with U.S. schools taking home three prestigious medals.

Impressive Medal Distribution

Of the 12 medals awarded this year, international institutions dominated the competition, claiming nine awards. Notably, Duke University and New York University were among the standout schools, each securing a gold medal, while the University of Southern California earned a bronze.

Highlights from the Ceremony

During the awards ceremony, Lei He of Duke University was recognized for his work “Drifting,” which won gold in the alternative/experimental category. NYU's Lara Dihmis received the top honor in the documentary category for her film “The Last People of Petra.” Meanwhile, USC's Arjun Fischer took home bronze for his documentary “Artificial Love.”

International Schools Excel

France showcased its animation prowess by winning both gold and bronze medals in the animation category. This year’s winners were selected from an impressive pool of 2,972 submissions from 894 global colleges and universities. Previous winners of the Student Academy Awards have gone on to achieve 70 Oscar nominations, underscoring the significance of this platform for emerging filmmakers.
