As municipal services dwindle and infrastructure deteriorates, South Africans are increasingly taking the reins of their communities, with civic leaders rallying together to demand change during Daily Maverick's annual The Gathering. From restoring public spaces to contesting local elections, the message is clear: communities are no longer waiting for government solutions.

Community Action and Collaboration

Ferial Haffajee, associate editor at Daily Maverick, shared her observations about the challenges facing her neighborhood in Mayfair, Johannesburg. While potholes and malfunctioning traffic lights were prevalent, Haffajee noted a remarkable spirit of resilience among residents. Bea Swanepoel, CEO of Jozi My Jozi, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to foster meaningful change. Her organization successfully illuminated the Nelson Mandela Bridge, turning it into a 'beacon of hope' amidst citywide load shedding, thanks to partnerships with businesses and community members.

Protests and Accountability

Yunus Chamda, coordinator of the Joburg Crisis Alliance, spoke on the necessity of holding local authorities accountable. Through public protests, the alliance successfully advocated for the reopening of a closed Joburg Library, engaging residents in a campaign that involved donating books with petitions inside. Chamda criticized the complacency of citizens in relying too heavily on government, urging a more proactive role in demanding ethical leadership.

Challenging Municipal Failures

Asad Gaffar, chairperson of the eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement, outlined a more confrontational approach. With the upcoming local elections in mind, Gaffar's movement aims to secure council seats to address the rising costs of municipal services that burden households. He highlighted a critical need to confront corruption within local governance. Meanwhile, Tim Harris, co-founder of the Mission for Inner City Cape Town, discussed revitalizing Cape Town's inner city post-pandemic by fostering public-private partnerships, aiming to unlock the community's potential without solely relying on government intervention.
