Enzo Fernandez Joins Manchester City in Record-Breaking Move

By Editor • September 1, 2026 • 1 min read

In a landmark transfer, Manchester City has officially secured midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, matching the British record fee of £125 million ($169 million) on the final day of the summer transfer window. The Argentina international, who played a pivotal role in his national team's journey to the 2026 World Cup final, had been the subject of speculation regarding his future at Stamford Bridge.

The deal was confirmed by Manchester City through a video posted on social media, just minutes before the transfer deadline of 22:00 GMT on Tuesday. Although initial agreements seemed to be in place, there were last-minute concerns as the clock ticked down. Fernandez took to Instagram to express his farewells, reflecting on his emotional time at Chelsea where he had hoped to bring the club more silverware.

“These have not been easy days for me,” Fernandez shared. “I became obsessed with winning and bringing this club every trophy that its history deserves.” His tenure at Chelsea saw him help the team clinch the UEFA Conference League in 2025, followed by the FIFA Club World Cup. After joining Chelsea for £106 million ($143.2 million) from Benfica in 2023, Fernandez's aspirations shifted as he expressed interest in joining Real Madrid, leading to a brief fallout with the club.

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, praised Fernandez’s capabilities, emphasizing his all-around skill set and prior experiences in high-pressure situations. With his arrival, City bolsters its midfield alongside Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, continuing their trend of significant investments in player acquisitions.
