Ex-Gang Leader Convicted of Tupac Shakur's Murder After 30 Years

In a landmark verdict, Duane "Keffe D" Davis, a former gang leader, was found guilty of first-degree murder for his involvement in the 1996 shooting of rap icon Tupac Shakur. The jury in Clark County, Nevada, reached their decision after nearly three hours of deliberation, concluding an 11-day trial that revisited one of hip-hop's most notorious unsolved crimes.

Davis, 63, faces a potential life sentence without parole, with his sentencing scheduled for October 13. Following the verdict, emotions ran high in the courtroom as supporters of the prosecution expressed their relief, while Davis declared his intention to appeal the ruling.

During the trial, prosecutor Binu Palal detailed how Davis orchestrated the attack in retaliation for an assault on his nephew. "He acquired a firearm, got his group together, and went hunting for Mr. Shakur," Palal stated. Evidence presented included recordings of Davis discussing the incident, which he later recounted in interviews and his memoir, "Compton Street Legend." This narrative, however, was contested by Davis' lawyer, who argued that the evidence was unreliable and highlighted issues of police corruption.

Despite not being the shooter, Davis was implicated under Nevada law, allowing him to be charged with murder for orchestrating the crime. The case against him was strengthened by his own admissions, despite the absence of other witnesses, as the remaining co-conspirators have since passed away.
