Falkland Islands Extend Warm Wishes to Gibraltar on National Day

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly reached out to Gibraltar on Thursday, sending warm greetings to commemorate Gibraltar's National Day. This occasion marks a significant anniversary, celebrating the people's choice to maintain their British ties.

The assembly's message emphasized the strong connection between the two territories, describing them as 'kindred communities' united by their British identity and shared resolve to determine their own futures. The statement highlighted that the future of both peoples belongs solely to them.

Gibraltar’s National Day, observed on September 10, marks the 1967 referendum when 12,138 voters opted to remain linked to the United Kingdom, against just 44 who favored a shift to Spanish sovereignty. This year’s celebrations hold additional significance as they are the first since the new treaty regulating Gibraltar’s relationship with the European Union came into effect on July 15, eliminating routine checks at the land border with Spain.
