As the indie film 'Christine' marks its tenth anniversary, its creators are voicing serious concerns over the film's future due to a chain of corporate bankruptcies that threaten its availability. The film, which premiered in 2016 and garnered critical acclaim for its portrayal of mental illness, could face obscurity if the rights issues are not resolved.
Reflecting on a Powerful Performance
Rebecca Hall, who delivered a poignant performance as news anchor Christine Chubbuck, expressed her distress over the possibility of the film disappearing. In a pre-anniversary screening interview, Hall stated, "It feels terrible because this is definitely a film and a performance that I’m incredibly proud of, and I know that it means a lot to a lot of people." She emphasized the insanity of the idea that such a significant film could vanish.
Distribution Troubles Begin
Originally distributed by The Orchard, 'Christine' struggled to gain recognition despite its nominations and accolades, including Indie Spirit honors. Hall noted that the distributor lacked the resources for a substantial marketing push, which hindered the film's exposure. The Orchard was praised for its transparency in financial dealings, but began to face difficulties in 2019 when it was rebranded as 1091 Media. After being acquired by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, the company ultimately fell into Chapter 7 liquidation, complicating matters further.
Finding a Path Forward
The filmmakers are now entangled in a complex bankruptcy situation involving multiple stakeholders, including Great Point Media, the film's financier. Craig Shilowich, the film's writer and producer, expressed frustration at the lack of communication regarding the film's rights. The team has attempted to reach out to creditors for clarity and potential solutions, but have found themselves in a state of uncertainty. "The movie’s in limbo now, and it’s not clear how it’s going to be resolved," he stated.
