Former Defense Secretary Predicts Extended Conflict with Iran

In a recent interview, Leon Panetta, the former U.S. Secretary of Defense, warned that the ongoing conflict with Iran is unlikely to see resolution in the near future, predicting an additional six months of warfare. This assessment follows a series of U.S.-Israeli military strikes and a subsequent stalemate that has emerged after a preliminary ceasefire plan collapsed.

Panetta, who served under President Barack Obama and has a background as the CIA director, expressed concerns over the current state of U.S. military engagement in the region. He characterized the situation as a potential 'forever war,' similar to other prolonged conflicts in the Middle East. "It’s no mystery that the United States and Iran are caught in a terrible stalemate, in which there really are very few options available to bring this war to an end," he stated.

These comments come amid escalating tensions, with reports indicating that U.S. Central Command has targeted three Iranian tankers in response to missile launches from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Meanwhile, Iranian leaders have signaled a shift in their approach, with parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warning that any attacks on Iranian interests will be met with a swift and severe response. This precarious situation is exacerbated by ongoing U.S. sanctions that have compounded Iran’s economic troubles, making it increasingly challenging for the nation to withstand the pressures of the conflict.
