Freitag's Container Store Celebrates Two Decades of Innovative Design

Freitag, the Swiss bag manufacturer renowned for its sustainable approach to materials, has marked the 20th anniversary of its flagship store in Zurich, which has become a hallmark of innovative retail design. Erected from decommissioned shipping containers, the store initially opened its doors in a less-than-glamorous industrial district, but it quickly transformed into an iconic destination for design enthusiasts.

In collaboration with architects Spillman Eschle, Freitag launched this experimental retail space by stacking 19 containers, including nine that formed what they dubbed 'Zurich's smallest skyscraper'. Conveniently located just 150 meters from the Freitag factory, the store leveraged the proximity to supply unique materials—each bag made from repurposed heavy-duty trucking tarpaulin ensures that no two Freitag products are alike.

Since its opening, the store has undergone several upgrades and adaptations, including the addition of a photovoltaic system and a dedicated Repair Studio, allowing customers to revive their bags. The surrounding area has also seen a revitalization, with new bars, restaurants, and shops emerging, solidifying Freitag's impact on the local community and the broader landscape of sustainable design. To commemorate two decades, the upper floors will feature an exhibition titled 'A Second Life', showcasing the company's journey in promoting circular economy principles.
