Whyalla Football League Condemns Distasteful Comments at Awards Night

By Editor • September 8, 2026 • 1 min read

The Whyalla Football League has publicly denounced comments made during a recent awards ceremony that trivialized the ongoing scandal facing the Sydney Swans. The remarks, made by master of ceremonies Jock Sleep, were deemed "insensitive" and "unacceptable" by league officials.

During the event, Sleep joked about the Swans' current turmoil, suggesting that the local club South Whyalla could benefit from creating a scandal of their own to spark team spirit. "My advice to the Souths' coach … maybe we can manufacture a good old-fashioned scandal just to get that team going. It worked for the Sydney Swans," he quipped, referencing the Swans' recent performance amidst serious allegations against several players.

While acknowledging Sleep's intention to highlight how challenges can unify a team, Whyalla Football League president Keith Sichler stressed that such comments were not reflective of the league's values. He stated that Sleep is a respected local figure who has recognized the weight of his words and expressed regret for the harm they may have caused. The WFL is committed to fostering a respectful atmosphere across its events.
