Google's Historic €13 Billion Investment in Finland's AI Infrastructure

By Editor • September 9, 2026 • 1 min read

In a landmark announcement, Google has unveiled its largest single investment in Europe, committing €13 billion to bolster Finland's AI infrastructure. This ambitious plan includes the construction of three new data centers and the expansion of an existing facility, as the tech giant aims to meet the surging demand for AI services.

As part of this extensive investment, Google has signed a 22-year agreement with Finnish utility firm Fortum to purchase up to 50% of the electricity generated by the Loviisa nuclear power plant. This commitment not only secures energy for Google's operations but also provides long-term financial stability for the nuclear facility, which contributes to approximately 10% of Finland's electricity supply.

A Boost to the Finnish Economy

The implications of this investment extend beyond Google's operations. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo highlighted that the initiative is expected to create over 37,000 jobs during the construction phase and is projected to enhance the country’s GDP by €3.6 billion annually. Construction is slated to take place between 2027 and 2028, marking a significant economic boost for the region.

Finland: An Ideal Hub for Tech Investment

Finland's appeal as a data center hotspot has been reinforced by its cool climate, abundant low-carbon energy sources, and an efficient power grid. These factors not only attract tech companies but also facilitate the sustainable operation of data centers. Just days before Google's announcement, TikTok disclosed a $1 billion investment to establish a data center in Kouvola, further underscoring Finland's growing reputation in the tech sector.
