Grandfather Found Unfit for Trial in Shocking Child Endangerment Case

In a disturbing turn of events, Gary Siders Sr., a 73-year-old grandfather from southern Ohio, was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial on charges of child endangerment involving his 16 grandchildren. The ruling came during a court appearance on Wednesday, where he was seen in a wheelchair, facing multiple charges stemming from a June 30 raid that revealed the harrowing conditions in which the children were living.

The Vinton County raid uncovered a small, 12-by-12-foot room where the children, aged between 18 months and 18 years, were found in squalid conditions. Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the scene as “disgusting,” with Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson noting that the children appeared to resemble “feral animals” and several were unable to even speak.

Despite the findings about Siders' mental state, legal proceedings continue for other family members. His wife, Christina Siders, 68, son Gary Siders Jr., 36, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Siders, 33, have all pleaded not guilty to similar charges of child endangerment. Their children had reportedly been the subject of previous investigations by child protective services due to severe educational neglect and alarming developmental delays.

Defense attorney Dorian Baum stated that Siders’ cognitive decline was not unexpected and attributed it to his inability to comprehend the ongoing legal issues. He indicated that the prosecution against Siders would likely not proceed to trial since his condition was deemed “not restorable.” Meanwhile, the other family members face additional charges of sexual battery and unlawful conduct with minors.

The children, rescued from this nightmarish situation, were initially hospitalized for medical evaluations before being placed into state protective custody, highlighting a tragic failure of oversight despite earlier warnings from educators and medical professionals.
