Hollywood's Spiritual Awakening: Young Audiences Seek Depth in Faith-Based Storytelling

By Editor • September 2, 2026 • 2 min read

A recent study from UCLA's Center for Scholars & Storytellers (CSS) reveals a growing desire among younger audiences for profound and nuanced portrayals of faith in entertainment. The Future of Faith study surveyed over 2,000 individuals aged 14 to 24, with many expressing the need for authentic representations of spirituality that avoid cliché and stereotype.

Yalda T. Uhls, Ph.D., founder and CEO of CSS, emphasized the importance of this feedback in an interview with Variety. She noted that as young people transition into adulthood, they often find themselves questioning their beliefs outside the confines of traditional structures. 'They want to be able to have honest discussions,' Uhls stated, highlighting a prevalent desire for stories that reflect their struggles and questions regarding faith.

The study findings were shared during an event on August 5, where industry executives from major studios like Netflix and Lionsgate gathered to discuss the potential of spirituality-infused storytelling. Uhls noted, 'It’s a big opportunity,' pointing out that while purely religious films can be profitable, integrating faith themes into a broader array of genres could resonate more deeply with younger viewers.

The survey participants identified various films and series that exemplify the authentic representation they crave, such as “Mo,” “The Good Place,” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Uhls acknowledged that impactful narratives do not always need to treat religious elements with reverence, citing Netflix's “Unorthodox” as a compelling example that sparked discussion and reflection among audiences.

Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Milk,” underscored the significance of storytelling around faith during his keynote speech at the CSS event. He shared his personal journey with faith while discussing his adaptation of “Under the Banner of Heaven,” which delves into the complexities of life in a fundamentalist Mormon community. Black's experiences reflect a broader trend of artists grappling with their beliefs through their work, as they seek to connect with viewers on a more honest level.

In recent years, several notable filmmakers have tackled themes of faith in their projects, including Lee Daniels, who described his film “The Deliverance” as an exploration of higher power amid personal struggles. Upcoming films such as Greta Gerwig's adaptation of “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” are expected to engage with spiritual themes, indicating a shift in Hollywood's approach to storytelling.

Uhls concluded by expressing optimism about the entertainment industry's responsiveness to the desires of younger audiences. 'People are very, very interested in Hollywood listening to them,' she said, emphasizing the need for studios to prioritize authentic and thoughtful representations of faith in future projects.
