Hungarian Grave-Digging Contest Showcases Skill and Speed

In a unique display of skill and determination, 38 participants gathered at a cemetery in Nyergesújfalu, Hungary, this past Saturday for a competitive grave-digging event. Organized by the Hungarian Association of Cemetery Maintainers and Operators, the contest aimed to highlight the expertise involved in grave digging while challenging social taboos surrounding death.
The competitors faced tough conditions, with the sun-baked soil presenting a real challenge. Participants formed 19 two-man teams, each racing against the clock to dig graves that met specific dimensions. The focus was not only on speed but also on adhering to precise standards, essential for the grave-digging profession.
Róbert Nagy and his partner László Kiss emerged victorious, completing their task in an impressive time of 1 hour and 21 minutes. "Speed is the main thing here, not the beauty," Nagy commented after their win, acknowledging the importance of precision in real-life scenarios. Their efforts earned them a cash prize of 200,000 Hungarian forints, roughly $640.
