Hurricane Lowell Leaves Kauai in Disarray as 30,000 Lose Power

Hurricane Lowell has wreaked havoc on Kauai, Hawaii, cutting off power to around 30,000 residents as torrential rains and fierce winds lashed the island. By early Tuesday, nearly 92 percent of the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative's customers were left in the dark, despite the storm not making landfall.
The storm, classified as a weakened Category 1 hurricane, maintained wind gusts of up to 85 mph (137 km/h) as it passed approximately 128 kilometers (80 miles) west of Kauai. The extreme weather caused significant destruction, including downed trees and power lines, and flooded coastal roads, leading to the evacuation of about 300 residents.
Emergency officials are currently urging residents to conserve water and refrain from traveling to allow crews to safely assess and clear the damage. Kauai's mayor, Derek Kawakami, reported “extensive damage” and emphasized the need for community cooperation as the situation evolves. Fortunately, as of Tuesday morning, hurricane warnings for Kauai and the nearby island of Niihau were lifted, though hazardous surf conditions are expected to persist for several days.
