Incheon International Airport Takes the Crown from Dubai as World’s Busiest Airport

In a significant shift in global aviation, Incheon International Airport in South Korea has surpassed Dubai International Airport, becoming the world's busiest airport for international passengers. Preliminary data from the Airports Council International (ACI) indicates that Incheon welcomed 38.4 million international travelers in the first half of 2026, marking a historic achievement for the airport since its inauguration in 2001.

The recent surge in Incheon’s passenger numbers can be attributed to various factors, including an 18 percent rise in transfer passengers. Many travelers, previously routed through the Gulf, have altered their travel plans due to airspace closures stemming from the ongoing US-Iran conflict that began on February 28. This geopolitical tension has significantly impacted Dubai, which is expected to fall outside the top five busiest airports this year after holding the top spot for twelve consecutive years.

London Heathrow and Singapore’s Changi Airport are also in the mix, with Heathrow recording 37.79 million passengers and Changi attracting 34.53 million in the same timeframe. Incheon’s expansion, completed in 2024, now allows it to accommodate a larger volume of traffic, supporting 101 airlines to 158 international destinations. Additionally, the growing global fascination with Korean culture has contributed to the airport's rise, reflecting a broader trend in tourism and travel.
