India to Assist in Identifying Victims of Nepal Floods through DNA Profiling

The devastating flash floods in Nepal have led to a tragic loss of life, prompting the Indian government to extend its support in identifying victims. In a recent announcement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that DNA profiling services will be offered for first-degree relatives of missing persons.

Services Available for Identification

To assist in the identification of mortal remains, the Indian Centre will provide the services of Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs), State Forensic Science Laboratories (SFSLs), and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU). First-degree relatives in India, including parents, children, and siblings of the missing individuals, can have their biological samples collected for DNA profiling.

Death Toll and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

As of now, the death toll from the floods has tragically reached 1,259, with over 5,000 individuals still unaccounted for. Emergency rescue operations have successfully saved more than 12,000 people, but the search continues for those who are missing. The floods, which were triggered by an ice-rock avalanche, have left many towns and villages in northern and central Nepal in ruins.

How to Participate in DNA Profiling

The MEA has provided a framework for the DNA profiling process, stating that profiles can be sent to Nepali authorities for comparison with unidentified remains. Families can reach out for assistance via helpline numbers or email for further guidance on the profiling process.
