In the forests of Nagano Prefecture, scientist Akiko Takii is on the frontline of a unique bear management strategy. Responding to alarming increases in bear attacks, she approaches a trap where a young Asiatic black bear is caught.
At about a year-and-a-half old and weighing 15 kilograms (33 pounds), the small bear is in distress. After tranquilizing the animal, Takii collects blood and fur samples, but it’s too young for GPS tagging, so she releases it back into the wild.
