Venezuela's Simón Bolívar Airport Begins Limited Flights After Earthquake Repairs

Venezuela's Simón Bolívar International Airport has resumed limited commercial flights nearly ten weeks after being severely impacted by two strong earthquakes. A temporary facility made of metal structures has been set up in the airport's parking lot to accommodate travelers while the main terminal undergoes repairs.

The airport, located just north of Caracas, was closed following significant damage to its infrastructure due to the earthquakes of June 24, which had magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. These devastating events resulted in over 6,500 fatalities and displaced approximately 17,900 individuals.

Transportation Minister Francisco Garcés announced that the temporary structure can handle up to 2,168 passengers daily and includes essential services such as check-in counters, waiting areas, and medical facilities. Initial operations will feature seven domestic and four international flights, with plans to gradually increase flight capacity to 60% by early next year.

Most of the earthquake's casualties occurred in La Guaira state, known for its significant reliance on tourism and commerce linked to the airport and its port.
