Innovative Cabins Designed for Writers Unveiled at Jan Michalski Foundation

In a remarkable initiative to support literary creativity, the Jan Michalski Foundation in Switzerland has unveiled a unique collection of cabins designed specifically for writers. Located at the foot of the scenic Jura Mountains, these distinct living spaces are part of a residency program that invites authors and translators to immerse themselves in their craft.

A Creative Village in the Jura Mountains

The Jan Michalski Foundation, situated in Montricher approximately 30 minutes from Lausanne, provides a serene environment for around forty writers each year. This program is primarily tailored for those engaged in literary work, although collaborative projects that incorporate other disciplines are also welcomed. Residents benefit from individual cabins, access to an extensive library, and the stunning Swiss landscape, creating a perfect atmosphere for creativity.

Diverse Architectural Interpretations

The cabins, designed by a variety of architects including Kengo Kuma & Associates, ELEMENTAL, and atelier bonnet architectes, showcase an array of styles and functionalities. Each structure not only serves as a retreat but also as a reflection of different approaches to living and working. For instance, atelier bonnet architectes created a two-level cabin wrapped in steel and glass, with a design that promotes both privacy and connection to the surrounding landscape.

Another notable design by ELEMENTAL features a communal space that encourages interaction among residents, with a kitchen and dining area designed for shared meals and conversations. Meanwhile, Rintala Eggertsson Architects designed a cabin with four distinct levels, enhancing the experience of moving through the space.

As a whole, these nine cabins form a small, experimental neighborhood where writers can find solitude while still being part of a cultural community. The varying designs—from single-level units to more complex structures—allow for individual preferences in living and working arrangements.
