In a press briefing held at the United Nations, Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister and newly appointed President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, refrained from commenting on whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would attend the upcoming BRICS summit in India. The summit is set for September 12-13 and will focus on various pressing global issues.

Rahman, who assumed his UN General Assembly role on September 8, 2026, addressed questions regarding the summit, emphasizing his position as President rather than as a national official. He urged reporters to direct inquiries about bilateral matters to him separately as Foreign Minister.

The uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh's participation in the BRICS summit is heightened by the recent diplomatic strains between Bangladesh and India, particularly following India's decision to grant political asylum to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Despite this backdrop, India has invited Tarique Rahman to participate in an outreach session of the BRICS summit, reflecting his role as chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).
