Isabel + Helen Mark a Decade of Creativity with 'Motion Sickness' Exhibition

London's dynamic creative duo, Isabel Gibson and Helen Chesner of Isabel + Helen, are celebrating their ten-year milestone with an exhibition titled 'Motion Sickness,' running from September 12 to 20, 2026, at The Conran Shop. This showcase offers a unique glimpse into their whimsical and hands-on design process that has captivated audiences worldwide.

Gibson and Chesner, who first became friends while studying graphic design at Chelsea College of Art in 2009, have built a reputation for their playful, spectacle-driven installations. Their work often blurs the lines between art and design, emphasizing movement and interaction. As they reflect on the past decade, the duo reveals how their shared sense of humor and a DIY ethos have shaped their practice. “We started with low-fi materials and focused on creating engaging experiences,” Chesner explained.

Their journey began with a notable project for the Victoria and Albert Museum that allowed them to explore the Constructivist movement, which set the tone for their future endeavors. “From the outset, our focus was on audience engagement,” Gibson noted. Over the years, their installations have evolved into immersive playgrounds of creativity, incorporating elements like kinetic sculptures and vibrant colors.

'Motion Sickness' delves into the duo's fascination with movement through various exhibits, including their kinetic optical sculptures known as 'Blimps,' birch plywood stools, and paintings from their Twister Series, created using a rotating canvas technique. As they prepare for this exhibition, Gibson and Chesner express their excitement about showcasing not just their final products but the creative processes behind them. “The experimentation is just as important as the outcome,” Gibson emphasized.

As they look to the future, Isabel + Helen continue to balance their large-scale projects, like the 60-foot windmill at Coachella, with smaller, intricate designs like their whimsical egg-carrying train, 'The Scrambler.' Each project presents unique challenges and allows them to explore their artistic boundaries while bringing joy and wonder to audiences.
