Jan St. Werner, renowned as one half of the electronic duo Mouse on Mars, is set to release his latest solo album titled Squares Will Fall on November 13, 2023, under the Thrill Jockey label. This highly anticipated record boasts an impressive roster of collaborations, including contributions from Justin Vernon, Sufjan Stevens, Zach Condon of Beirut, and Ben Lanz from The National.
The title track, also named Squares Will Fall, features lyrics and vocals from Vernon, offering a glimpse into the album's unique sound. This piece has a fascinating backstory, originally composed in 2012 to mark a friend's birthday. Over the years, it transformed into an improvisational work during sessions at Vernon's studio in Wisconsin. The evolution of this track reflects a blend of influences and creative experimentation.
In addition to the title track, the album includes two more songs: “Swamp Brains,” featuring the vocals of Rosanne Rubino, and “Flötotto,” which showcases Stevens on drum machine and Lanz on trombone and bass. Werner previously presented “Squares Will Fall” as a live installation at the Ural Industrial Biennial in 2021, where innovative performance elements brought the piece to life.
