Joey Barton Remains in Custody as Bail Application Denied for Assault Case

By Editor • September 7, 2026 • 1 min read

Former football star Joey Barton, known for his stints with Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers, will remain behind bars after a judge denied his bail request. The 44-year-old is facing serious charges related to an alleged attack that occurred at a golf club earlier this year.

During a court appearance via videolink from HMP Liverpool, Barton learned from Judge David Potter that his bail application was rejected. The decision comes as the case, concerning an incident from March 8, has been adjourned for another six months, moving the trial date to March 2027. Barton is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to 51-year-old Kevin Lynch, who reportedly sustained significant injuries during the altercation.

The incident took place at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, where both men had been drinking prior to the attack. Lynch, who has a history in non-league football management and is the founder of NexGen Academy, is believed to have suffered serious damage to his eye. Barton, who has represented England once, will now wait in custody until a pre-trial hearing set for December 11, 2023, marking nearly a full year since his arrest.
