Kylie Minogue's Iconic Gold Hotpants Highlight Melbourne Arts Exhibition

In a vibrant celebration of Australian performing arts, the Arts Centre Melbourne has unveiled the ENCORE! exhibition, showcasing a treasure trove of 50 iconic items, including Kylie Minogue's legendary gold hotpants.

The exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the Australian Performing Arts Collection, which boasts an impressive array of costumes, instruments, and props from various Australian performances spanning over 170 years. Among the standout pieces are Olivia Newton-John's gown worn during her memorable 1978 television special with ABBA, and the maracas famously wielded by the late Peter Allen.

Celebrating Diversity in Performing Arts

Curators have meticulously chosen items from a staggering collection of over 875,000 artifacts to showcase the rich tapestry of Australia's performing arts history. Ian Jackson, the dance and opera curator, emphasized the challenge of narrowing down the selection to just 50 items but aimed to reflect the diversity and range of Australia's artistic landscape.

A Glimpse into the Past and Present

Among the treasures on display is a handmade vest crafted for Indigenous musician Archie Roach, which greets visitors as they enter the exhibition. The display not only revives cherished memories for many but also introduces new audiences to the stories behind these significant items. Notably, Minogue's hotpants, a pivotal piece in her career, were serendipitously discovered at a London flea market, later becoming a symbol of her resurgence in fame.

The exhibition is set to run at Hamer Hall, coinciding with Minogue's upcoming performance at the AFL Grand Final, further solidifying Melbourne's status as a vibrant hub for performing arts.
