Lang Boutique: Where Asian and American Design Intersect in LA

In the heart of Los Angeles' Row DTLA complex, a new multi-brand boutique named Lang is making waves with its unique blend of Asian and American design elements. Founded by Kayla Wong, Lang showcases gender-neutral fashion from Asian-founded brands, creating a culturally rich retail experience.
Architect Paul Chan skillfully transformed the 1,200 sq ft space into a theatrical setting, using a creative curtain system instead of fixed walls. This design choice allows for dynamic product displays while maintaining an open atmosphere for community events.
Chan notes that their shared experiences of growing up in Hong Kong and now residing in Los Angeles heavily influenced the design. 'Our native home became the muse but the store is not a direct recreation,' he explains, emphasizing the blend of cultural fragments that shape Lang.
The boutique also serves as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting exhibitions and performances. A semi-circular bench, upholstered with a custom fabric reminiscent of Hong Kong's utility bags, invites community interaction. Above it, four tiers of paper lanterns adorned with Cantonese sayings provide both light and a nod to tradition.
Chan describes the overall aesthetic as a mix of 'gloss and grit, opulence and improvisation.' Each design element, from handmade washi paper tables made from upcycled materials to bespoke furnishings, reflects the layered identities of Los Angeles’ Asian American communities.
