Macron Urges YouTube to Invest in Local Content Amid Cultural Challenges

In a bold statement at the Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, French President Emmanuel Macron called upon YouTube to step up its investment in local content and adapt to the changing landscape of the entertainment industry. Co-chaired with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, the summit highlighted the pressing need for traditional media and platforms to collaborate in support of cultural integrity.

The Rise of Social Media and AI

Macron emphasized the significant impact of platforms like YouTube and TikTok, noting that they are reshaping how audiences consume media. He pointed out that YouTube has become the go-to platform for many, often overshadowing traditional channels that invest heavily in content creation. "YouTube is very efficient. It’s de facto the default platform in a lot of countries for a lot of people," he remarked, underscoring the necessity for these platforms to engage more deeply with local creative ecosystems.

Promoting Local Content and Creativity

Advocating for a multilateral approach, Macron stated that France and other nations should push for YouTube to invest in local productions, mirroring commitments made by platforms like Netflix and Disney. His vision includes a landscape where creativity flourishes, with protections for authors and an emphasis on transparency regarding AI-generated content. "When you have content produced by AI, you just have to know it. So transparency for us is key," Macron asserted.

Defending France's Cultural Model

As his presidency nears its end, Macron expressed concern over the threats facing France's cultural model, particularly from rising far-right and far-left political sentiments. He highlighted the importance of France’s international tax credits and the vital role of the CNC (National Film Board) in supporting local filmmakers. "If somebody wants to withdraw this tax credit, it will just kill the industry and a lot of opportunities," he warned, emphasizing the need to defend the cultural policies that have shaped France's artistic landscape for decades.
