Italian Horror Film 'The Spiral' Captivates Venice Audience with Enthusiastic Reception

By Editor • September 7, 2026 • 1 min read

The world premiere of 'The Spiral' took place on Monday night in Venice, where it received an electrifying response from attendees, culminating in a standing ovation that lasted over nine minutes. Directed by Paolo Strippoli, known for his previous works such as 'The Holy Boy' and 'A Classic Horror Story', this campy horror thriller promises a unique blend of chills and dark humor.

Starring Jasmine Trinca as Anna, a mother who makes a Faustian bargain to save her daughter Alice, played by Romana Maggiora Vergano, the film dives into a series of sinister events that ensue from this deal. Valeria Bruni Tedeschi portrays the devilish figure in a trench coat, enhancing the film's eerie atmosphere. With a strong supporting cast that includes Adriano Giannini as Anna’s husband Walter and Andrea Genovese as their son Tobia, the film explores the breakdown of family bonds amidst horror.

Despite its playful tone and exaggerated performances, particularly from Tedeschi, 'The Spiral' may face tough competition for the Golden Lion at this year's festival, headed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Nevertheless, the film's engaging narrative and vibrant direction have positioned it as a refreshing contrast to the more serious offerings at Venice. Following its premiere, the film is set to screen in Toronto's Midnight Madness section and will hit Italian theaters on October 8, distributed by 01 Distribution.
