Magna Expands Investment in Yuma Energy to Propel Battery Swapping in India

In a bold move to capitalize on the burgeoning electric vehicle market in India, Magna International has announced a $35 million investment in Yuma Energy, a Bengaluru-based battery-swapping network for electric two- and three-wheelers. This new funding increases Magna's ownership stake in Yuma from an initial 51% established during their joint venture in early 2023.
Yuma, which emerged from the Indian mobility startup Yulu, has already achieved notable success with over 60 million battery swaps and around 100,000 batteries active in its network. With this latest capital injection, Yuma aims to enhance its infrastructure and double its fleet of batteries over the next 12 to 18 months, as they target the rapidly growing gig economy in India.
Muthu Subramanian, Yuma's managing director, highlighted the unique challenges faced by delivery riders, noting that only 10% to 15% of vehicles used by gig workers are currently electric. He emphasized that battery swapping presents a more efficient solution compared to traditional charging methods, as a battery can be exchanged in under two minutes, allowing riders to maintain their productivity.
Despite the potential, Yuma has yet to turn a profit, though some of its older stations are reportedly EBITDA-positive. The startup operates over 400 swapping stations and is aiming for EBITDA break-even within the next two quarters. To meet the increasing demand, Yuma continues to expand its operations, projecting that non-Yulu customers will contribute to 25% of its swaps within two years.
Yuma's network spans 18 cities, including major urban areas like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The company plans to broaden its reach into Chennai and Pune, while also increasing its presence in existing markets. Looking ahead, Yuma is considering international expansion into Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, regions that also have a significant demand for two-wheeled vehicles.
Notably, Yuma not only manages the swapping network but also designs and manufactures its own battery packs and charging units, giving it comprehensive control over the technology used in its operations.
