Malik Elassal, a standout star from the FX sitcom Adults, is riding high on the success of the show’s second season, which premiered last week. Elassal, who plays Samir, shared insights about the series, its memorable moments, and the unexpected twists that keep audiences engaged.

A Tough Scene and a Memorable Finale

In the sixth episode, titled "Pop Girlie," Elassal’s character faces a unique challenge when his girlfriend, Carly, played by Rachel Marsh, decides to leave dental school to pursue her dream of becoming a K-pop star. This plot twist stems from misguided advice from his friend Anton, which Elassal found difficult to portray. He remarked, "It was just a very conflicting thing, which is the best thing for a sitcom," highlighting the complexity of balancing humor and character development.

Behind the Scenes Laughter and a Challenging Take

Not all moments were serious, though. Elassal shared that filming the show is often filled with laughter, as evidenced by a recently released blooper reel. One of the funniest days on set involved co-star Julian Manjerico’s hilarious dance moves, which left the cast struggling to maintain composure. Elassal recounted, "I was specifically watching Jack try so hard not to laugh, that literally tears were stress falling from his eyes from trying not to ruin the take."

However, the most challenging scene for Elassal came during the dramatic finale. In a heartfelt moment, his character attempts to make a grand romantic gesture while simultaneously facing a breakup with Carly. He remarked on the difficulty of shooting a basketball shot “like 40 times” while maintaining an emotional performance, saying, "It was like being on mushrooms. There was no time or space." The pressure of the moment was palpable, with a large crew watching and significant stakes involved.

Intriguing Character Developments

As the season progresses, viewers are treated to an unexpected hookup between Samir and Billie, played by Lucy Freyer. This twist left Elassal feeling conflicted, as he expressed concern for the characters’ future together. “I’ve had that happen in a friend group before, where two people hooked up. They either got to get married or this is bad,” he noted, adding an air of uncertainty to the outcome of Samir's romantic endeavors.

Elassal also shared his surprise at the direction the script took, revealing that the cast was kept in the dark about certain plot points to maintain authenticity in their performances. "The fans already think we’re doing that all the time, and we’re really not. We’re just playing the scenes out," he said, reflecting on the evolving dynamics within the show.

As fans eagerly watch Adults Season Two on Hulu and FXX, Elassal continues to balance his busy promotional schedule with moments of downtime, humorously admitting his attempts at being a “nap guy” didn’t quite pan out.
