U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to embark on a diplomatic journey through South America, focusing on newly elected leaders who align closely with the Trump administration's policies. His itinerary includes meetings in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, highlighting the region's recent political shift toward the right.

Meetings with New Leaders

Rubio will first stop in Colombia on Tuesday to engage with President Abelardo de la Espriella. Following this, he will meet President Daniel Noboa in Ecuador before concluding his trip in Peru with leader Keiko Fujimori. The State Department has yet to outline a detailed agenda, but emphasizes discussions will revolve around U.S. support for Colombia's earthquake recovery efforts, cooperation against narcoterrorism, and enhancing commercial relations.

Regional Political Shifts

Rubio's visit comes amidst a notable rightward shift in Latin America, marked by the election of several leaders who share Trump’s ideological stance. This trend includes Honduran President Nasry Asfura and Bolivia’s Rodrigo Paz, alongside other right-wing figures such as Argentina's Javier Milei and El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele. Rubio has referred to this political realignment as an "extraordinary achievement" for the region.

Enhanced U.S. Influence

In line with the Trump administration's goal to assert influence in Latin America, Rubio’s trip is part of a broader strategy referred to as the “Donroe Doctrine,” echoing the historic Monroe Doctrine aimed at reducing European intervention. The administration has shifted its focus to a more militarized approach to combating drug trafficking, which it frames as a war against narco-terrorism. This approach has included increased military collaboration with Colombia and Ecuador to tackle drug cartels while facing criticism for alleged extrajudicial killings in the region.
