Maternity Unit Review Sparks Outcry from Mothers in Toowoomba

The recent release of a summary report regarding the maternity services at Toowoomba Hospital has ignited frustration among local mothers, particularly Ashleigh Hills, who experienced a traumatic birth experience. The five-page report, made public yesterday, acknowledged ongoing issues within the maternity unit, despite Queensland Health's claims of progress.

Concerns Over Birth Experiences

Ashleigh Hills, who participated in the review, detailed her distressing experience during the birth of her son, Austin. Hills was initially sent home from the hospital after being told she was not in labor, only to return hours later for an emergency cesarean section due to complications. "It was just really scary," she recounted, highlighting the chaos she faced during the delivery.

Her ordeal did not end there; after noticing a lump on her newborn's head, it was discovered weeks later that Austin had suffered a fractured skull, a condition overlooked by medical staff at the hospital.

Calls for Transparency and Accountability

The brief nature of the report has drawn criticism from opposition figures, with Shadow Health Minister Mark Bailey labeling it an insult to affected families. He emphasized the need for the full report to be made public, stating, "There is so much important material to cover and there is so much that needs to be done to overcome what has been an appalling situation." Bailey is advocating for a more thorough investigation under the Hospital and Health Boards Act.

In response to the report, Darling Downs Health Service chief executive Annette Scott acknowledged that improvements were necessary, particularly in the handling of complaints. While the hospital is reportedly working on 117 recommendations to enhance maternity services, many feel that the issues are far from resolved.
