Renowned actress Meryl Streep and Oscar-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras have stepped in as executive producers for the upcoming documentary My Undesirable Friends: Part II – Exile, directed by Julia Loktev. This film serves as a sequel to Loktev’s acclaimed 2024 documentary, My Undesirable Friends: Part I – The Last Air in Moscow, which highlighted the struggles of independent journalists in Russia.

In this new installment, Loktev chronicles the perilous journeys of young journalists branded as "foreign agents" by the Russian government following the invasion of Ukraine. With the shuttering of independent media, these reporters are forced to flee Moscow, navigating exile across several countries over four years while facing significant dangers, including death threats and government labeling as terrorists.

Streep expressed admiration for Loktev, calling her a chronicler of the disintegration of press freedom in Russia. She emphasized the filmmakers' ability to portray the resilience and determination of these journalists, who continue to seek the truth despite overwhelming odds. Poitras also praised the film, comparing it to the works of literary giants like Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, and highlighting the bravery of the journalists depicted.

Following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, My Undesirable Friends: Part II will also be showcased at the New York Film Festival before its theatrical release and streaming on Mubi later this year.
