Revolutionary At-Home Urine Test Detects 90% of Bladder Cancer Cases

A groundbreaking at-home urine test has shown the ability to identify over 90% of bladder cancer cases, according to a recent study conducted across seven NHS urology departments involving 964 patients.

The test, named GALEAS Bladder, analyzes genomic material in urine for DNA mutations linked to bladder cancer, successfully detecting 71 out of 77 cancers, yielding a remarkable accuracy rate of 92.2%. This innovative approach could significantly decrease the number of invasive cystoscopies currently performed, as around 10,900 new cases arise each year in the UK.

Lee Silcock, co-author and Chief Product Officer at Nonacus, emphasized the importance of prioritizing patients at higher risk for bladder cancer, stating, "What matters most is identifying those most likely to have cancer sooner." The study, published in the journal European Urology Oncology and led by the University of Birmingham, suggests that implementing GALEAS could lead to 730 fewer urgent cystoscopies per 1,000 patients, easing the strain on urology departments.
