Renowned designer Michele De Lucchi has taken his talent to the high seas, collaborating with luxury yacht manufacturer Azimut to create an extraordinary interior for the upcoming Magellano 27M, set to launch in September 2026. After a decade of partnership with Azimut, including the design of the company’s headquarters, De Lucchi's latest project promises to meld comfort with adventure.
A Harmonious Blend of Design and Adventure
Giovanna Vitelli, chair of Azimut Benetti, emphasized that De Lucchi's adventurous spirit aligns perfectly with the ethos of the Magellano series. Originally introduced in 2009 as the ‘SUV of the seas,’ the new model retains its dual-mode hull, offering both dining and relaxation options at varying speeds. Finnish designer Jarkko Jämsén has distilled the yacht's exterior into a minimalist design characterized by elegant lines.
Crafting an Immersive Experience at Sea
De Lucchi's design for the Magellano 27M, developed in partnership with Davide Angeli under AMDL Circle, features a fluid wooden interior that enhances the yacht's overall aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean’s classic architecture, the interior is designed to seamlessly interact with the sea, creating a dynamic environment that shifts with the journey. “Imagining an interior that was not separate from what was happening around it” was a key focus for De Lucchi, reflecting a philosophy that values the evolving nature of experience.
Embracing Cultural Influences
The interior showcases a sophisticated use of light oak wood, travertine, and intricate Japanese craftsmanship, with a wall in the primary bedroom covered in Hosoo fabric—a nod to traditional techniques. For De Lucchi, the integration of Japanese elements signifies a deep appreciation for the emotional intensity found in different cultures’ craftsmanship. “When different cultures and skills meet, things emerge that neither could have created alone,” he noted, highlighting the collaborative nature of design.
As the luxury yachting world adapts to a post-pandemic focus on wellness and personal exploration, the Magellano 27M stands poised to offer a transformative experience, with De Lucchi’s innovative vision steering the way forward.
