Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption Halts Over 200 Flights in Indonesia

In a significant disruption to air travel, Indonesia’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has temporarily halted operations due to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. The suspension, which was initially set to end at 5:30 AM local time, has affected a total of 209 flights, including several international routes.
The eruption, which began late Friday, prompted officials to issue warnings as volcanic ash spread across Lampung province in Sumatra and Banten province in Java. The Transportation Ministry confirmed the impact of the ashfall on air traffic and noted that the situation was closely monitored.
Berton Panjaitan, a spokesperson for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency, reassured the public that there is no immediate tsunami threat from the volcano. He advised residents to remain vigilant, suggesting precautions such as wearing masks and protective eyewear to combat the effects of the ash, which has caused irritation among residents and prompted schools to cancel activities. Fishermen in the area also suspended their trips due to the hazardous conditions.
