NASA Shifts Focus to Drones for Mars Exploration

In a significant shift, NASA is abandoning plans for new landers or rovers on Mars, opting instead for aerial exploration through drones. The upcoming SkyFall mission, featuring three helicopters, is set to launch by late 2028 alongside the Space Reactor-1 "Freedom" mission, which will test nuclear electric propulsion.
This ambitious plan, estimated at $2.1 billion, marks NASA's first major venture into drone science on Mars, following the success of the Ingenuity helicopter in 2021.
