Iran Promises Immediate Response if U.S. Reinstates June Agreement

During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek on September 1, 2026, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized that Tehran would "immediately" reciprocate if the United States honors the June agreement designed to halt hostilities.
Pezeshkian stated, "If the United States returns to its commitments under the memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately take reciprocal action." This MoU was intended to quell tensions following a series of attacks by the U.S. and Israel that resulted in significant Iranian casualties, including the death of former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The agreement has since faltered, with both nations blaming each other for violations. Pezeshkian noted the challenges of diplomacy without mutual respect and compliance, warning that U.S. violations could jeopardize diplomatic efforts. He reiterated Iran's preference for negotiation over conflict, highlighting the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
As the U.S. and Iran continue to clash in this critical region, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated the necessity for the U.S. to adhere to its commitments under the June deal for any progress to be made.
