Nepal Estimates $4.78 Billion for Flood Recovery Efforts

In the aftermath of devastating floods triggered by a glacial collapse, Nepal's foreign ministry has announced that the reconstruction cost will reach approximately $4.78 billion. This announcement came on September 11, 2026, following the catastrophic event that occurred on August 26, when a massive surge of water, mud, and debris swept through the region, primarily affecting areas along the China-Nepal border.

According to foreign ministry spokesman Lok Bahadur Chhetri, the immediate need for recovery and short-term reconstruction is estimated at $57.67 million, while the bulk of the funding, around $4.71 billion, will be allocated for long-term rebuilding efforts. The floods have claimed the lives of over 1,400 individuals, with approximately 5,600 still unaccounted for, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive recovery measures.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has emphasized the importance of raising awareness within the international community about the climate change-related disasters that Nepal has faced. His upcoming address at the UN General Assembly will focus on this pressing issue. With Nepal contributing only a small fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions, the country is seeking long-term support to adapt to the challenges posed by a rapidly changing environment. Meanwhile, a preliminary UN assessment has indicated that infrastructure losses alone could reach $158 million, with total damages expected to exceed this figure significantly.
