New Charges for Mount Fuji Climbers Who Require Helicopter Rescues

In a bid to enhance safety and discourage reckless climbing, Yamanashi Prefecture has announced plans to implement charges for helicopter rescues on Mount Fuji during the mountain's closed season. This initiative, unveiled on Monday, is part of a broader strategy to manage climbing activities more effectively.

Mandatory Climbing Plans

Under the new regulations, climbers intending to ascend beyond the 6th Station of Mount Fuji during the off-season will be mandated to submit a climbing plan prior to their expedition. Authorities will assess these plans and may suggest modifications if they find any aspect—such as equipment or chosen routes—lacking.

Potential Charges for Reckless Actions

Climbers who require rescue from a prefectural disaster-response helicopter without having submitted an approved climbing plan will face charges. Additionally, those who deviate from their submitted plans or ignore recommended changes may also incur fees if it is determined that their actions constituted reckless climbing.
