New Community Oven Blends Tradition and Modernity in the Alps

A new community oven, named backdirwas_5, has emerged in Boden, Austria, as part of the Medienfrische festival, designed by Studio Carraldo. This innovative structure combines concrete, timber, firebrick, and stainless steel, reinterpreting local Alpine building traditions.

The oven's name translates to 'bake yourself something,' emphasizing its role as a gathering place for local residents and visiting artists. Its foundation consists of a solid concrete base, crafted from round timber logs sourced from nearby forests, while the dome-shaped combustion chamber is constructed from refractory firebricks, designed to retain and efficiently utilize heat.

The exterior features a sculptural stainless steel shell that echoes traditional wooden shingles, with large panels connected in a precise interlocking system. The design not only honors the architectural language of local farmhouses but also fosters community interaction.
