Reviving a 1960s Gem: The Minimalist Cabin of Cap Ferret

By Editor • September 1, 2026 • 1 min read

This summer, amidst the devastation of wildfires in Cap Ferret, a beacon of architectural revival emerged thanks to the Bordeaux-based firm, Touton Architectes. The firm has skillfully renovated a dilapidated cabin, transforming it into a modern interpretation of the classic Girolle vacation home, a style popularized in the 1960s.

Led by architect Florence Lazime, the restoration focused on maintaining the spirit of the original Girolle design, characterized by timber frames, tiled roofs, and expansive glass areas. These homes were originally intended as stylish yet affordable holiday retreats, blending seamlessly into the picturesque landscape of the Bassin d’Arcachon.

The owners, a Parisian couple enamored with the area, recognized the extensive work needed when they purchased the property. "They approached us because of our architectural style," Lazime explained. The design choices reflect the local aesthetic, with grid-pattern windows and Douglas fir cladding that harmonizes with the surrounding forest.

To accommodate entertaining guests, the architecture features open living spaces and several bedrooms, each with an en suite. Notably, the principal suite resides in a separate annex, providing added privacy for the owners and includes an outdoor shower, a coveted feature for vacation homes.

For the interiors, Lazime’s team emphasized a simple yet timeless decor, utilizing wood paneling throughout. While pine was favored for most areas, a more durable exotic wood was selected for the bathroom. The project champions outdoor living, with every bedroom offering direct access to the gardens.

Innovative design elements, such as accordion-style windows above the kitchen counter, enable the space to flow seamlessly from indoors to outdoors, ideal for summer gatherings. "Everything opens up so you can eat, enjoy a drink, or have a barbecue," Lazime noted, reinforcing the Girolle’s legacy of merging indoor comfort with outdoor leisure.
