Single Mothers Shape Future of South Africa's Athletic Stars

Bayanda Walaza and Tiisetso Malungane are not just rising stars in the world of athletics; they are shining examples of how love and sacrifice can foster exceptional talent. Both young athletes have made significant strides in their sports, largely thanks to the unwavering support and dedication of their single mothers.
From Tragedy to Triumph
Bayanda Walaza, a 20-year-old sprinter and double junior world champion in the 100m and 200m, faced unimaginable loss when his father was murdered before his eyes. His mother, Tholiwe Walaza, stepped up to be a constant source of support in his life. “It was very important for me to be a present mom… to show him a parent’s love to ease his pain,” she reflected. Tholiwe took proactive steps, including counseling, to help Bayanda navigate his grief and prevent him from succumbing to resentment.
Nurturing Talent Against All Odds
Similarly, 16-year-old Tiisetso Malungane has been making waves in middle-distance running, breaking records and earning accolades. Raised by his mother Catherine, who also has a background as an accomplished long-distance runner, Tiisetso’s journey began when he would chase after her during training sessions as a toddler. Catherine recognized his potential early on but made the difficult decision to put her own athletic ambitions on hold to focus on nurturing her son’s talent. “It was very difficult for me, because my sacrifice for Tiisetso to be where he is was both with time and my personal ambitions,” she explained, yet she has no regrets.
Support Systems and Future Aspirations
Both mothers credit the Ruta Sechaba Foundation, which provides scholarships to talented youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, for playing a pivotal role in their sons’ athletic journeys. Catherine, now an athletics coach, is committed to giving back by fostering and coaching other children, ensuring they have the opportunities she once lacked. “I love children; I don’t want to see them suffer,” she said, emphasizing the importance of support in nurturing talent. Through strict parenting combined with encouragement, both women are raising respectful young men who are poised to represent South Africa on the global stage.
