Opia: A Zurich Boutique That Embodies Precise Menswear and Authenticity

By Editor • September 7, 2026 • 2 min read

Opia, a unique boutique located in Zurich, has become a beacon of refined menswear, thanks to its founder Claudia Desax and her distinct vision. Since its inception in 2008, the store has curated a diverse selection of brands, including Evan Kinori, COMME des GARÇONS, and Ludwig Reiter, reflecting Desax's journey from a remote Swiss village to the heart of the fashion world.

From the Alps to the Fashion Scene

Claudia Desax's roots lie in the picturesque Swiss Alps, where she grew up speaking Romansh in an isolated mountain village. Her early encounters with fashion were sparked by witnessing Japanese snowboarders in oversized attire, igniting her passion for clothing. After a stint with Swissair, where she traveled the globe, Desax shifted her focus to fashion, studying scenography and immersing herself in the vibrant culture of Bangkok.

Building a Unique Brand Ecosystem

Initially, Opia focused on offering rare Asian labels, but the inclusion of COMME des GARÇONS in 2012 marked a turning point, transforming the store from a local gem to an international player. Desax emphasizes the importance of carrying unique brands, stating, "What brands seem to forget is that they can reach new customers by sitting on the same rack as a small brand with a different audience." Today, Opia operates two separate stores, showcasing a curated mix of established and emerging designers.

A Grounded Approach to Fashion

Desax's upbringing continues to influence her approach to fashion. She values authenticity and simplicity, qualities that resonate with the designers she collaborates with. According to Keiko Seya, founder of the slow-fashion label Seya, Desax's appreciation for fabric and craftsmanship stems from her humble origins. This no-nonsense yet warm demeanor has fostered strong relationships with designers, as echoed by Jan Jan Van Essche, who appreciates Desax's intuitive and considerate nature.
