Pakistan's GSP+ Status at Risk Amid EU Scrutiny

As Pakistan seeks to secure its position in the European Union's Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), the stakes have never been higher. The EU ambassador has warned that the benefits associated with this vital trading scheme are not guaranteed, highlighting the urgent need for Islamabad to address ongoing compliance issues.
The GSP+ framework allows developing countries to enjoy tariff exemptions on goods exported to the EU, significantly boosting their economies. However, with the current scheme set to lapse at the end of this year, Pakistan must navigate a challenging reapplication process. EU Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis emphasized that Pakistan's future in the program hinges on tangible improvements in human rights and governance.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts between Islamabad and Brussels, Ambassador Karoblis noted serious concerns regarding Pakistan's adherence to international conventions, specifically mentioning issues like enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. The EU's assessment indicates that while some legislative measures have been enacted, they have yet to result in meaningful change on the ground. With GSP+ being crucial to Pakistan's economy—accounting for a substantial portion of its exports—the pressure is on the government to demonstrate its commitment to reform.
